In 2022, what I thought was a harmless lump on my shoulder turned out to be a cancerous tumour. In 2023 I discovered I was diabetic. In 2024 I'm paying back the luck I had to have both of those things diagnosed quickly and treated properly. Lots of people go through them, but not everyone has the good fortune to be surrounded by the right people and services to get to grips with them and keep moving forward. I owe my life and health to lots of people, my partner Edel, my family and friends, and a host of medical professionals. I am extremely privileged to have all those things available to me and I could not have asked more of any of them.
I am going to ask more of myself though, and of you. In order to pay that luck back, I'm going to spend 2024 doing as much as I can to raise funds for two organisations doing tireless, vital work to help those in need,
The Irish Cancer Society and
Diabetes Ireland
My efforts will consist of doing the things I'm good at (well, sort of good at anyway....)
I'll be working from this list, dependent on conditions and no further medical mishaps!
- Hiking the Wicklow Way
- Cycling the Wild Atlantic Way
- Quest Lough Derg
- Mourne Mountain Marathon
- Quest Killarney
- Westport Sea to Summit
- And
at least
one Big Mountain!
So, this is where you come in. You can get involved in a few ways and anything you can do to help will be hugely appreciated, by me, by the charities, and by everyone who ever benefits from their work.
